Contract Ending in Korea? — Your Options: Renew, Switch, Change Visa, or Return Home

Your Contract Doesn't Have to Mean Goodbye

When your work contract is ending, you have several options depending on your visa type and situation. Planning ahead gives you the best chance of staying in Korea legally — or returning home prepared.

Option 1: Re-sign with Your Current Employer

  • If both you and your employer agree, you can extend your contract
  • For E-9 visa: maximum stay is 4 years 10 months total
  • Make sure to update your contract in writing

Option 2: Change Employer (사업장 변경)

  • Allowed under certain conditions: contract ended, workplace closed, unpaid wages, abuse
  • You must apply at the Employment Center within a set time (usually 1-3 months)
  • You can use MyKoreaWork to find new employers quickly

Option 3: Switch to a Different Visa

  • E-9 → F-2 (Resident): If you meet the points requirement (Korean ability, income, time in Korea)
  • H-2 → F-4 (Overseas Korean): After meeting specific conditions
  • Any visa → F-6 (Marriage): If you marry a Korean citizen
  • Apply at your local Immigration Office before your current visa expires

Option 4: Prepare to Return Home

If you're planning to leave Korea:

  • Claim your pension refund: Apply at the National Pension Service before leaving — you can get back everything you paid
  • Claim departure guarantee insurance: Your employer has been contributing — collect it
  • Get your final paycheck: Including any unused vacation days
  • Cancel your alien registration card at the Immigration Office
  • Close your bank account or set up international access

Don't Wait Until the Last Day

Start planning at least 2-3 months before your contract ends. Immigration processes take time, and missing deadlines can affect your future visa applications.

Practical Tips from the Field

  • Start planning 3 months before your contract ends. Visa processing takes 4–8 weeks minimum.
  • Re-entry Special Program (재입국특례): If you completed your E-9 contract faithfully, you can return to Korea within 3 months instead of waiting 1 year.
  • Collect your Departure Guarantee Insurance (출국만기보험) payout at the airport — this is separate from your last salary.
  • If you want to stay, check if you qualify for F-2 resident visa based on your income, TOPIK score, and years in Korea.
